Booking a portrait session is exciting. The day finally arrives, and you want everything to feel effortless. The truth is that a little bit of preparation makes a huge difference. It helps you feel confident, relaxed, and ready to enjoy the experience.

As your photographer, my goal is to guide you every step of the way so the only thing you have to focus on is being present. This checklist will walk you through everything you need for a smooth and successful session.

Last-minute wardrobe decisions, forgotten items, and rushing to get out the door can create unnecessary stress. When that happens, it is harder to relax in front of the camera and enjoy the process.

You deserve a session that feels calm, organized, and enjoyable. With a simple checklist, you can arrive feeling fully prepared.


Follow this day-of checklist for a seamless session

Below is a step-by-step guide tailored for all session types. Headshots. Branding. Family. Maternity. Newborn. Dancer portraits. This is exactly what will help you feel confident and set up for success.


1. What to Bring

For Everyone

  • Your selected outfits. Steamed or ironed and hung on a hanger.

  • Backup outfit. Clean and pressed.

  • Neutral undergarments that match your outfit choices.

  • Lip balm, makeup touch-ups, powder for shine, small mirror.

  • Hair brush or comb.

  • Water bottle.

  • A small snack if you tend to get hungry.

  • Your session inspiration board if you created one.

For Headshots and Branding

  • Accessories that match your brand story. Minimal and intentional.

  • Glasses cleaning cloth if you wear glasses.

  • A pressed blazer or jacket for layering.

For Family Sessions

  • One small comfort item for children if needed.

  • Non-messy snacks for kids.

  • Baby wipes for quick cleanups.

  • Hair ties or clips for last-minute adjustments.

For Newborn Sessions

  • Extra diapers and wipes.

  • Pacifier if baby typically use one.

  • Pre-measured formula if bottle feeding.

2. What to Organize Before You Leave the House

Lay Out Your Wardrobe

Make sure outfits are steamed, lint-free, and complete with accessories. Keep everything on hangers to avoid wrinkling.

Pack a Small “Session Bag”

Include your touch-up items, hair tools, snacks, and anything else noted above.

Confirm Directions and Parking

The last thing you want is to feel rushed. Check your route and allow yourself a few extra minutes.

Eat something light

Low blood sugar leads to irritability and fatigue. A small meal or snack beforehand will keep everyone comfortable.

Hydrate and rest

Good skin, clear eyes, and energy all come from feeling rested and hydrated.

  • Do hair and makeup early if possible.

  • Arrive a few minutes ahead of schedule.
