Your Maternity Session — What to Expect

Pregnancy is one of the only seasons in life that is completely unrepeatable. The way your body feels, the way your partner looks at you, the anticipation of someone you haven't met yet, all of it exists in this narrow window of weeks. A maternity portrait session with Sylwia Ok Photography is designed to capture it before it passes.

Every session begins with a consultation to understand your vision: the mood, the setting, the style of images you want on your walls. If you're not sure where to start, Sylwia will guide you. She has a small selection of maternity gowns and flowing fabrics available for use at no additional charge, and she works with every body type and every comfort level, including clients who weren't sure they wanted photos in the first place. She can also provide you with links to online stores that has a great selection of maternity gowns to buy or rent.

The result is a gallery of portraits that don't just document your pregnancy, they honor it. Images worthy of your walls, your baby's nursery, and the album you'll hand down one day.

“I am glad I did the photos”

— Katie B.

“Sylwia went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable for my maternity shoot. I wasn't sure about doing the photos in the first place as I wasn't feeling very beautiful or confident with all the changes that pregnancy brings. But, Sylwia showed me her portfolio of maternity pictures and a site to rent a dress for the shoot, and talked about how special this time was and that she was sure I would look great for the shoot if I decided to do it. I am glad I did the photos, even if I feel like my body and my face don't look like mine anymore. These are memories that we will have forever and that helped me realize how grateful I should be (and am) for this opportunity to become mom.”

WHEN TO SCHEDULE YOUR MATERNITY SESSION?

The ideal maternity session window is between weeks 28 and 36 of pregnancy. At this stage, the bump is pronounced and beautifully rounded, and most expecting mothers are still comfortable enough to move through poses and hold positions without strain. After week 36, the final stages of pregnancy can bring fatigue, swelling, and physical discomfort that make a longer session more challenging - though sessions have been done right up to the due date for clients who want portraits at full term.

Ideal window: Weeks 28-32 are often the sweet spot: the bump is substantial, most mothers are feeling their best relative to the third trimester, and there’s enough time before the due date to plan and execute the session without rushing. Ideal window:

When to contact the studio: Around week 22-24 is a good time to book your session and lock in a date. This gives enough lead time to plan your session style, source any gowns or outfits, and coordinate schedules with a partner or other family members.

Earlier sessions: Sessions earlier than week 28 are possible - Sylwia has photographed clients as early as week 22, when the bump is more modest but still visible and the mother’s comfort level is often higher. The style of portrait is slightly different at this stage but equally beautiful.Earlier sessions:

Last-minute bookings: Last-minute sessions are welcome. If your due date is approaching and you haven’t booked, call the studio directly at 941-224-0550 - Sylwia will do everything possible to accommodate a late booking, and some of the most memorable maternity portraits have been made in the final days before delivery.Last-minute bookings:

 FAQs

  • The ideal window is between weeks 28 and 36. At this stage, the bump is full and rounded, and most mothers are still physically comfortable enough to move through poses without strain. Weeks 30–32 are often the sweet spot - bump is pronounced, energy is reasonable, and there’s still enough time before the due date to plan without rushing. That said, Sylwia has photographed clients as early as week 22 (a more modest bump, but still a beautiful portrait) and as late as the day before delivery (dramatic, intimate, and irreplaceable). There is no wrong time - there’s only the time that feels right for you. Call the studio when you’re ready and Sylwia will advise based on your specific situation.

  • Clothing that showcases the bump photographs best: form-fitting or draped styles rather than loose, boxy shapes that hide the silhouette. Flowing gowns, fitted dresses, wrap-style fabrics, and tasteful intimate looks all work beautifully. The studio maintains a collection of maternity gowns in a range of styles and colors - available for use during your session at no additional charge. If you’d like a specific look not in the studio collection, Sylwia can direct you to dress rental services or purchase options. Most clients bring 2–3 outfits and Sylwia helps select the best combination for the chosen style and location. Outfit guidance is provided in detail during the consultation so you arrive prepared.

  • Yes - and partner and sibling portraits are actively encouraged. Some of the most meaningful maternity portraits are the ones that show the family in the moments before it changes: a partner’s hands on the bump, an older child pressing their ear to listen, a couple together in the quiet before the arrival. Sylwia will work these moments into the session naturally alongside the individual maternity portraits. If you’re including other children, especially toddlers, mention their ages when booking so the session can be paced accordingly. Outfit coordination guidance for partners and children is included in the consultation.

  • Maternity sessions are available at three primary settings, and many clients combine two within a single session. The Lakewood Ranch studio (7037 Professional Pkwy E, Suite A, Sarasota FL 34240) offers a clean, controlled environment with full gown and prop access - ideal for classic, elegant, and fine art maternity work. Outdoor and beach locations throughout Sarasota and Bradenton (Siesta Key, Casey Key, Lido Key, nature preserves, and parks) provide natural light and environmental texture. In-home sessions create intimate, lifestyle-style portraits in the spaces where your family actually lives. The best choice depends on your aesthetic, the time of year, and the style of portraits you want displayed in your home - this is discussed during the consultation.

  • Maternity sessions are available in three formats. A focused 45-minute session covers one location, one outfit change, and produces a tight, curated set of images - ideal for clients who want a beautiful portrait without a longer commitment. A 2-hour custom session allows for multiple outfit changes, a more relaxed pace, and a broader range of poses and compositions. An extended multi-location session is available for clients who want both studio and outdoor imagery, or who want to document this stage of pregnancy with more depth. The right format is discussed during the consultation based on your vision and how you plan to use the images.

  • This is one of the most common things Sylwia hears from maternity clients - and it’s the question she most wants to address directly. Pregnancy changes your body in ways that can feel unfamiliar and, for many women, uncomfortable to photograph. Sylwia’s posing, lighting, and direction are specifically designed around the maternity form - not to minimize the pregnancy, but to present it in the most beautiful, flattering, and true way possible. Many of her most meaningful client stories come from women who almost didn’t book, did it anyway, and walked away with portraits they describe as among the best images they’ve ever had. The review from Katie B. on this page is one example. If you’re uncertain, a brief conversation with Sylwia before booking can help you decide whether this is the right time.

  • Maternity portraits are available as high-resolution digital files, fine art prints in a range of sizes and finishes, custom heirloom albums, and wall art. Albums are a particularly meaningful format for maternity work - a curated book that captures this specific season of your life alongside the newborn portraits that typically follow. Digital files are delivered within 10 business days of ordering. Albums within 4–6 weeks. Wall art within 3–4 weeks with complimentary installation included. Pricing and product options are presented at the ordering appointment.

  • Many Sylwia Ok Photography clients book both, and it’s a natural pairing. The maternity session documents the pregnancy itself; the newborn session documents the arrival. Together they tell the full story of the beginning of your baby’s life in a way that neither session does alone. If you’re considering both, mention it when you contact the studio - Sylwia can discuss how to coordinate timing, styling, and product choices across both sessions to create a cohesive set of images and heirloom products.
