How to Keep Kids Happy During a Family Photo Shoot
(Yes, It’s Possible!)
If you’ve ever tried to wrangle your kids for one nice family photo… you know the struggle is real.
As a mom myself, I totally get it… by the time you’ve coordinated outfits, gotten everyone dressed, packed snacks, and made it to the photo shoot… you probably deserve a medal.
But here’s the good news: Family portraits don’t have to be stressful, especially for your little ones. In fact, some of my favorite sessions are the ones where kids laugh, play, and show their real personalities, because those are the moments you’ll want to remember.
After photographing hundreds of families (and plenty of toddlers with BIG opinions), I’ve discovered a few simple tricks to keep kids happy during your photo shoot.
Let me share my best secrets with you:
1. Let Them Be Kids
The best portraits happen when we let kids… well, be kids! Don’t worry if your little one wants to twirl, explore, or get a little silly: those natural, candid moments often turn into the most cherished images.
I always allow time for breaks, play, and giggles during your session. The more relaxed they feel, the more genuine the smiles.
2. Snacks = Magic
Never underestimate the power of a good snack. Bring along easy, non-messy treats your kids love: think fruit snacks, goldfish crackers, or mini marshmallows.
A quick snack break can turn grumpy faces into happy ones, fast. Just avoid chocolate or anything that might stain their outfits.
3. Timing Is Everything
We’ll schedule your session at the time of day when your children are naturally happiest, whether that’s morning after breakfast or late afternoon before dinner.
Tired, hungry kiddos = frustration for everyone. Well-rested kids = happy, cooperative photo moments.
4. Bring a Favorite Toy or Comfort Item
Sometimes, having a favorite stuffed animal, small toy, or comfort item nearby helps kids feel more secure. It’s like a little piece of home that keeps them grounded, and sometimes, that lovey even makes a cute guest appearance in your portraits!
5. Lower the Pressure
Here’s your permission slip to release the pressure for “perfect” photos. Some of the most heartwarming images come from authentic moments: a tickle fight, a goofy expression, or your child clinging to you in a big bear hug.
Your family’s love and connection are what truly matter, not forced smiles or Pinterest-perfect poses.
6. Trust Your Photographer (That’s Me!)
I’ve spent years working with little ones: from energetic toddlers to shy preschoolers. I know how to gently guide them, keep things light, and capture beautiful portraits, no matter their mood. I don’t remember how many times after the session mom mentioned to me that would be a miracle if I got even one great photo out of the session and yet, at the galley review that were surprised how many portraits I was actually able to capture and deliver.
You can relax knowing I’ll take care of the details and you just focus on enjoying the experience with your family.
Final Thought
At the end of the day, your family photo shoot is about capturing your story: the joy, the chaos, the love, and everything in between.
With a little preparation, a lot of patience, and these simple tips, your session can be fun, memorable, and even enjoyable for your kids (and you!).
